Can we have a legal elopement with just the two of us?

More and more couples are swapping the big “cue the confetti!” wedding for something a little more low-key, heartfelt, and uniquely them. Enter: the intimate elopement. Whether it’s a quiet ceremony under a tree in Kings Park, on the bank at Matilda Bay,or even in your backyard, the beauty of eloping is in its simplicity.
But what about the legal stuff? Can you really get married with just the two of you? Almost! Legally, you’ll need two witnesses over the age of 18 to sign your marriage certificates on the day.
Now before you panic and start dragging in second cousins or the dog groomer, don’t worry - your witnesses don’t need to be friends or family (though they can be!).
If it’s just the two of you and you want to keep things truly intimate, I can help organise a pair of lovely humans to act as your official witnesses. It’s something I do all the time, especially for secret elopements or destination weddings where it’s just the couple and the celebrant. No awkward explanations or last-minute guest list shuffles required!
And the best part? Your marriage ceremony can be as casual, quirky, or classic as you like - provided we tick the legal boxes (which I make super easy for you). Want to say your vows barefoot on the beach or dressed as your favourite movie characters in a city laneway? Go for it. As long as the required legal wording is included, your ceremony can be as non-traditional and personalised as you wish. After all, your love story isn’t cookie-cutter, so why should your wedding day be?
