How Long Should a Wedding Ceremony Be? (Hint: Your Guests Will Thank You)

If you're planning your wedding, you've probably asked yourself...

"How long should our wedding ceremony be?"

It's one of the most common questions I get as a Perth marriage celebrant, and the answer is actually pretty simple.

Long enough to be meaningful. Short enough to keep everyone's attention.

Because let's be honest...no one has ever walked away from a wedding saying, "I just wish the ceremony had gone for another 20 minutes."

So, How Long Is a Typical Wedding Ceremony?

In Australia, most wedding ceremonies fall into one of two categories.

A Fully Personalised Wedding Ceremony

Time: Around 20 to 30 minutes

This is perfect if you want your ceremony to include:

  • Your love story

  • Personal vows

  • Ring exchange

  • A few laughs

  • Plenty of heartfelt moments

  • All the legal wording required to make your marriage official.

It's relaxed, entertaining and genuine, without dragging on.

In my experience as a marriage celebrant in Perth, around 25 to 30 minutes is the sweet spot. It gives your guests enough time to laugh, smile and maybe even shed a happy tear, while leaving them wanting more rather than checking their watches.

What If We Just Want to Get Married?

That's absolutely okay too. Not every couple wants a big ceremony. Some simply want to make it official with the people who matter most,or sometimes, with no guests at all.

That's where my Short & Sweet Ceremony comes in.

A Short & Sweet Wedding Ceremony

Time: Around 5–10 minutes

It includes everything legally required to marry in Australia, plus the special moments that make it feel like a wedding. Simple. Relaxed. Stress-free.

Perfect for:

  • Elopements

  • An intimate moment with just a few nears and dears

  • Couples who don't enjoy being the centre of attention

  • Covering the legal requirments for your marriage before celebrating in an overseas destination wedding.

  • Those who simply want to say "I do" without the fuss.

Short doesn't mean rushed. It simply means every word has a purpose.

Does a Longer Ceremony Make It More Special?

Not at all. Some of the most beautiful ceremonies I've ever officiated have lasted less than ten minutes. And some unforgettable ceremonies have gone for half an hour because every story, laugh and promise felt genuine.

It's not about the clock. It's about how the ceremony feels. Guests don't remember how many minutes you stood at the altar. They remember how they felt watching you become a married couple.

What Makes a Great Wedding Ceremony?

It's not the length. It's the connection. A great ceremony should:

  • Feel relaxed

  • Sound like I've known you forever

  • Include a few laughs

  • Have heartfelt moments

  • Flow naturally

  • Leave your guests smiling

That's exactly what your marriage celebrant should create. Whether it's five minutes or thirty.

Don't Worry About Entertaining Your Guests

Here's a little secret...

Your guests aren't timing your ceremony. They're there because they love you. If your ceremony feels authentic, they'll be completely engaged. The best ceremonies aren't the longest. They're the ones where everyone walks away saying, "That was so them."

So... What's the Right Length?

If you ask me? A personalised wedding ceremony of around 20 to 30 minutes gives you plenty of time to celebrate your story without losing the attention of your guests.

If you're after something simple and intimate, a 5 to 10 minute ceremony can be just as meaningful.

There isn't a "perfect" length. There's only the length that's perfect for you.

Looking for a Marriage Celebrant in Perth?

Whether you're dreaming of a fun, relaxed 30-minute personalised wedding ceremony or a simple 5-minute legal ceremony, my job is to make getting married feel easy. I'll guide you through the legal paperwork including lodging the Notice of Intended Marriage, help create a ceremony that is absolutely all about you, and make sure your wedding day starts with a moment you'll actually remember, not one you'll just rush through.

After all, the ceremony isn't just the part before the big party.

It's the moment your marriage begins.
