What Does a Marriage Celebrant Actually Do? (Spoiler: It's a Lot More Than Just Saying "You May Kiss!")

When most people picture a marriage celebrant, they imagine someone standing at the front, smiling nicely, saying a few words, making the marriage official and heading home.
Easy enough, right?
Not quite.
As a marriage celebrant, I can tell you there is a lot happening behind the scenes long before you walk down the aisle, and even after you've danced the night away. So if you're wondering what you're actually paying for when you book a celebrant for your wedding, here's a little peek behind the curtain.

First Things First... I Make Sure You're Actually Married
Let's start with the serious bit (don't worry, I'll keep it brief).Getting married in Australia isn't just about saying "I do." There are legal requirements that need to be completed correctly.
As your celebrant I will:
Prepare your legal paperwork.
Check your identity documents.
Make sure you're legally able to marry (i.e no forgotten trips to Vegas chapel).
Lodge all the required paperwork.
Register your marriage after the ceremony.
Miss a step? Things can get messy. The good news? Your celebrant knows exactly what needs to happen, so you don't have to become an expert in marriage law overnight.
I'm Part Writer, Part Storyteller
This is where the magic happens.
A great ceremony isn't pulled from a template. It's written around you.
How did you meet?
What makes your relationship work?
Who leaves the dishes in the sink? Who's always late? Who insists on bringing home another rescue dog?
These little details are what make guests smile, laugh and sometimes reach for the tissues.
The goal isn't to tell your entire life story, it's to create a ceremony that feels like it couldn't belong to anyone else.
Help Calm the Wedding Nerves
Wedding mornings are full of excitement......and usually at least one person wondering where the rings are.
A celebrant often becomes the calmest person in the room.
Need reassurance before you walk down the aisle?
Forgot where you're supposed to stand?
Can't remember which hand the ring goes on?
I've got you. I've seen just about everything, and chances are, whatever you're worried about isn't nearly as big a deal as it feels in the moment.
Help You Write Your Wedding Vows (Without Making Them Sound Like a School Assignment)
One of the biggest questions couples ask is:
"Do we have to write our own personal vows?"
The answer is no.
But if you want to, I can can absolutely help.
Whether you want something romantic, funny, heartfelt or all three, I'll give you guidance so you're not staring at a blank page wondering how to sum up your favourite person in 200 words.
No AI-generated clichés. No awkward poetry. Just words that sound like you.

Keep the Ceremony Flowing
Ever been to a ceremony that felt... awkward? Long silences. Guests unsure when to sit. Microphone issues. Someone standing in the wrong spot.
As an experienced marriage celebrant I will be quietly managing all of that behind the scenes.
I'll cue everyone, keep things moving, work with your photographer, liaise with your musicians and gently guide you through every moment so it all feels effortless.
If I'm doing my job well, you probably won't even notice.
Ask Your Guests to Put Their Phones Away (Nicely)
This one deserves its own mention.
You've spent months planning your ceremony. The last thing you want is a guest stepping into the aisle with an iPad or phone just as you're about to walk towards your future partner.
As your celebrant I can make an unplugged ceremony announcement before your ceremony gets underway, that's warm, polite and often gets a laugh, while making sure your professional photographer captures the moments that matter.
When Your Ceremony Is Over And After Your Wedding Day
Once the ceremony is over, my work is not quite done.
I will:
Complete and sign all the legal marriage documents.
Make sure you and your witnesses have signed in the right places.
Lodge your marriage paperwork with Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Let you know when your marriage has been registered, and give you information on how to apply for a certified copy of your Official Marriage Certificate.
Only then can I officially tick "married" off the list!

So... What Are You Really Paying For?
Yes, you're paying for someone to stand at the front and marry you. But you're also paying for experience. For someone who has done this hundreds of times. Someone who knows how to calm nerves, solve problems before you even notice them, make your guests laugh, keep everything running smoothly and create one of the most memorable moments of your wedding day.
Because while your reception might be where the party starts...
Your ceremony is where your marriage begins...and that deserves more than a script downloaded from the internet.
Looking for a celebrant who'll make the whole process feel easy?
From the legal paperwork to writing a wedding ceremony that is authentic and light-hearted, my job is to take the stress off your shoulders so you can focus on getting married and actually enjoying every minute of it.
If you're planning your wedding or elopement in Perth, down in the beautiful South West, or any other destination, I'd love to help create a ceremony that your guests will still be talking about long after the confetti has settled.
